Lt. Robert McHolland, from Hurley, Missouri,  landed at Utah Beach with the 90th Infantry Division in early June 1944.  His introduction to World War II came quickly, among the infamous hedgerows of Normandy.  He first served as a platoon leader with Company M of the 358th Infantry. Later that summer, McHolland would be promoted to [...]

Did you all get enough basketball this weekend?  Unfortunately, both my teams lost on Friday night.  Irish and Boilers gone.  Maybe they’re saving themselves for the big show. But it’s a new week.  Monday, and time for the 90th Infantry Division Picture of the Week. Colonel Eustis L. Poland served as the Chief of Staff [...]

Last Thursday, we ran a post regarding a most interesting wayside cross.  If you remember the site lies at the intersection of roads D-15 and D-24, just west of Pont l’Abbe in the Normandy region of France. Hobert Winebrenner, author of BOOTPRINTS,  and his unit, the 358th Infantry, 90th Infantry Division, helped liberate the area.  [...]

Well, it was high school sectional basketball finals weekend here in Indiana.  Honestly, a very big deal.  Hope your team did well. But now, it’s Monday, and time for the 90th Infantry Division Picture of the Week.  How about a snapshot from Bruville, France?

In BOOTPRINTS, Hobert Winebrenner speaks of the liberation of the villages Picauville and Pont l’Abbe, [...]

Although the phrase is probably overused, some pictures do “say a thousand words.”  Case in point, this 90th Infantry Division photo from Bavigne, Luxembourg, and the Battle of the Bulge.

World War II: West Meets East

February 24, 2011

Summer 1945 saw World War II draw to a close across Northern Europe.  Allied troops simultaneously squeezed German forces from both fronts.  As the vise tightened, impromptu meetings of East and West occurred throughout occupied Germany and Czechoslovakia.  Perhaps most notable is the meeting of leaders, Stalin, Churchill and Truman, at the Potsdam Conference, where [...]

Monday so soon?  You betcha!  And winter has returned to the Midwest.  At least we have the 90th Infantry Division – Picture of the Week.

Good Monday morning to all.  Time again for the 90th Infantry Division – Picture of the Week.  This photo is dedicated to a friend and follower of the site, Tristan in France.  Tristan is especially interested in the World War II history of his region, particularly the Allied push through the Falaise Gap in the [...]

Hope all went well for you this weekend.  More snow here in the Midwest.  Time to get back to work, and to the 90th Infantry Division Picture of the Week. I absolutely love this photo.  For whatever reason, I think there’s a common misconception that foxholes were these nicely sculpted, plenty deep, often times timber-lined [...]
