Weekly History Wrap Up: 10/07/11.

The weather is absolutely beautiful here in the Midwest, making this Friday all the more wonderful.  Time for the Weekly History Wrap Up.

I love firsthand accounts, and here’s another great example.  Former Marine, James Griffith of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, escorted photographer Joe Rosenthal to the top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, then protected him while he snapped the famous flag-raising shot.

Sad news out of Kentucky, where World War II vet, Jay Warden, kindly allowed a young lady into his home to use the bathroom.  She left with his wallet.  Worse yet, he missed his Honor Flight to the WW II Memorial in D.C. because of his lack of identification.

With tightening budget constraints, the U.S. Navy’s “Mothball Fleet” is under attack.

Love it!  World War II and Korean War veterans will be gathering near Akron, Ohio for a roundtable discussion of their experiences.

After ten years in Afghanistan, are we “Back to the Future” with the Vietnam War.

Some memories don’t fade.  South Korea’s most heralded filmmaker, Im Kwon-taek, is still haunted with images from growing up during the Korean War.

And lastly, with the recent conviction of John Demjanjuk, Nazi hunters are taking one last look at old cold cases regarding Nazi death camp guards.

Til Monday, have a historical weekend.
