Yes, my source for the truly odd and interesting of wars past has come through yet again.  He recently came across this book at, I believe, either a Goodwill or maybe a yard sale. It is titled, “Dere Mable, Love Letters of a Rookie,” written by Edward Streeter and illustrated by Bill Breck.  The book, first published in 1918, reproduces love letters from “Bill,” who was serving in World War I with the 27th (N.Y.) Division, to his lady back home, Mable. And you’ve got to love the unique spelling throughout.

Let’s begin with the dedication, addressed to the author’s fellow Doughboys.

“To a million Private Bills who have suddenly learnt to call a coat a blouse. Taking things as they find them. Vaguely understanding. Caring less. Grumbling by custom. Cheerful by nature. Ever anxious to be where they are not. Ever anxious to be somewhere else when they get there. Without thought of sacrifice. Who have left the flag-waving to those at home. Who serve as a matter of course.”

Stay tuned for more “Dere Mable.”
