World War II Cooks.

Long, a cook at Fort Wolters, Texas - 1942.

Haven’t we all seen them in the movies? Our war-time cooks seem to always be portrayed as a bit on the portly side, stuffed into a way-too-tight t-shirt and stained white apron. And of course, the stubby, heavily-chewed cigar is an absolute essential part of the ensemble. Round it out with a huge knife for rapid-fire potato peeling, and that just about covers it.

But could there actually be any truth to this stereotype? I just came across this pic from 1942 of a cook named Long at Fort Wolters, Texas. Hmm … maybe the movie people weren’t that far off after all. Anybody remember this guy?
